Collateral Global -- Collection of negative impacts of lockdown policies
From the same group that published the Great Barrington Declaration. Most results are from the UK, I think because one of hte authors if from there. A random selection:
- A model projects ~3300 cancer deaths over five years for breast/colorectal/lung/oesophageal cancer (https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanonc/article/PIIS1470-2045(20)30388-0/fulltext)
- Wait list for elective procedures in UK expected to double from ~4M to almost 8M due to lockdown. Long discussion over how to prioritize the backlog post-covid. For example, a hip replacement will have lower priority than a cancer treatment. (https://www.edgehealth.co.uk/post/covid-19-impact-on-waiting-times-for-elective-procedures)
- Cancer screenings during lockdown was 12% of prior levels. Weekly number of cancer detections down 58%. (https://gut.bmj.com/content/early/2020/07/19/gutjnl-2020-322179)
- Alcohol sales by volume increased 31% in March. Anecdotal references to worse cases of liver disease. (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7295462/pdf/main.pdf)
- Increase in child abuse, called "abusive head trauma", in 1 month period at a specific hospital in the UK. The absolute number is from a rate of 0.67 -> 10 cases per month. This doesn't count all child abuse, just cases where the child was taken to the hospital. (https://adc.bmj.com/content/early/2020/06/30/archdischild-2020-319872)
- A 32% increase in calls reporting concerns for wellbeing of a child. This is sounds neighbors phoning in concerns, "parental behaviour, physical and emotional abuse and neglect".
