California passes law to force Uber, DoorDash etc. to hire employees
Currently Uber/DoorDash/etc. workers are considered independent contractors. A new law passed in California would force the companies to reclassify them as employees. This could result in a complete overhaul of how these companies operate, since they'll need to pay benefits and additional taxes. On the flip side, they'll be able to start requiring specific schedules for their workers, which could have some advantages. Costs for consumers will likely rise.
