Middleton's book that supposedly inspired Gibbons to convert to Catholicism
Middleton basically argues that Protestants reject Catholic 'miracles' by questioning the reliability of the witnesses. But if they applied the same standards to Jesus' miracles they'd reject them too. Gibbons credited this work for his (temporary) conversion to Catholicism. But according to Wikipedia recent scholarship suggests he made up that story to disassociate himself from the philosphes/French Revolution.
